Beijing University of Technology: Hazard Mitigation Strategy and Monitoring Technologies for Urban and Infrastructure Public Buildings

The Beijing University of Technology (BJUT), formally Beijing Polytechnic University of the Beijing Municipal System of Higher Education, and the University at Buffalo (UB) of the State University of New York, have been involved in a long-term formal educational exchange and research cooperative program since 1980.

As part of this program, Professor Xiyuan Zhou, Director of the Key Laboratory at BJUT, and George C. Lee, former Director of MCEER at UB, began planning for a cooperative research thrust on “Multiple Hazard Resilient Public Buildings.” In February 2003, they co-organized a workshop to explore possible areas of cooperative research on this theme between the two institutions. The workshop, held at BJUT, brought experts from both countries together to present and discuss recent advances in disaster mitigation technologies for urban infrastructure and public buildings. Discussions focused on the use of advanced technologies in critical public buildings and transportation networks to protect them from damage due to earthquakes and other hazards.

A follow up workshop was carried out at BJUT in November 2005 with a specific theme to use the Badminton gymnasium under planning at BJUT for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing as an integrated information platform to generate multi-hazard research information. Participants presented state-of-the-art research related to multiple hazard resilient critical facilities. Topics included structural health monitoring, design structural strength under multiple hazard loadings, indoor air quality and safety monitoring, structural damage detection and response control, multiple hazard risk analysis and evacuation systems. This second workshop was co-organized by Professors Xiyuan Zhou and Ailin Zhang of BJUT and Professor George Lee and Dr. Mai Tong of MCEER, UB.

Based on the successful discussions that resulted from these two workshops, MCEER and BJUT agreed to develop a demonstration project for multiple hazard mitigation and emergency response for large public infrastructure.

MCEER investigators at the University at Buffalo (UB) and researchers from the Beijing University of Technology (BJUT), People’s Republic of China, are collaborating to develop a demonstration project for multiple hazard mitigation and emergency response for large public infrastructure. The badminton arena on the BJUT campus is being used for the 2008 Olympic Games, and it will be used as the platform to develop multiple hazard information for future cooperative research.
